Who Is Daryl Somers Married To: In addition to being an Australian television personality and musician, Daryl Paul Somers, OAM is a three-time Gold Logie Award winner. Hey Hey It’s Saturday, the long-running comedy-variety show on which he ascended to national prominence, and Dancing with the Stars, the live-performance competition show on which he maintained his television notoriety and status, propelled him to national prominence even further.

Somers was honored by the Australian government in 2004 with the award of a Medal of the Order of Australia, and by Australia Post in 2018 with the publication of a series of postage stamps featuring his likeness.

Somers began his professional television career on July 14, 1971, when he took over as the host of an afternoon children’s program called Cartoon Corner, which had previously been hosted by James Kemsley and was previously known as Skeeter’s Cartoon Corner (who went on to draw the famous Ginger Meggs comic strip for 23 years).

He introduced himself as Daryl Somers with the following words: “Hi, I’m Daryl Somers, Skeeter will no longer be with us, and now it’s time for a cartoon.” Mr. Magoo was the subject of his audition, which consisted of him performing an impression of the character. To appear on the show, he was paid $75 per week.

Hey Hey It’s Saturday premiered on the 9th of October, 1971, later that year. Somers began co-hosting with footballer Peter McKenna, but after eight weeks, his co-host was replaced by the pink hand-puppet Ossie Ostrich, which was handled by former In Melbourne Tonight staff writer Ernie Carroll. Somers’ first co-host was footballer Peter McKenna. McKenna was on the show for a long period of time after that.

Originating as a Saturday morning children’s cartoon show, the programme eventually grew in both size and scope as it gained popularity. As the show progressed, more cast members were added, including booth announcer John Blackman, who also provided voice work for a large number of (unseen) characters, and eventually, co-host Jacki MacDonald.

Additionally, the program’s production crew began to play a more prominent role in the series, with sound-effects technician Murray Tregonning incorporating amusing audio cues and sound effects from a massive bank of recorded eight-track cartridges into the show and personnel such as long-serving cameraman “Lucky Phil” Lambert appearing on a regular basis.

The series’ distinctive brand of irreverent humor quickly attracted a large adult audience, and by 1984, it had grown in popularity to the point where Nine made the unprecedented decision to move it to a 9:30 Saturday evening timeslot and renamed it Hey Hey It’s Saturday Night, which was a hit with the public. It continued to air on Saturday nights for the remainder of its run, but in 1985 it was moved to the 6:30 p.m. time slot and finally reverted to the name Hey Hey It’s Saturday as well.

It was one of the most successful and continuously high-rated programmes in the history of Australian television, and it received numerous prizes, including three Gold Logie Awards for Somers, during its peak.

Hey Hey was a television show that aired on the Nine Network in Australia for 28 years (1971–99). It had by that time established itself as a cultural institution, thus it came as a huge shock when the Nine Network announced that the series would be canceled at the end of 1999.
