When Does Texas Join The Sec: When I started following the Southeastern Conference in 2013, the conference had been a 14-team league for a little more than a year at that point. I can tell you that the admission of Texas A&M made the league stronger, while the inclusion of Missouri made it colder; and that things went wacky outside the SEC’s boundaries.
Both Nebraska and Rutgers, who are located over 2,000 kilometres apart, decided to join the same league. That journey is a breeze in comparison to the almost 1,500 miles that you would have to travel in order to go from Texas Tech to West Virginia, which is now a member of the same league.
The titles of the conferences eventually become misleading. The Big Ten consists of 14 teams, the Big 12 has 10, and the Western Athletic Conference boasts a school that is located in Windy City.
Worse, rivalries became disturbed. Even Thanksgiving had to be compromised due to realignment. One of my all-time favourite rivalries was Texas vs Texas A&M, which was traditionally played on a holiday or on Black Friday. Since 2011, the teams haven’t competed against one another.
Since Missouri and Texas A&M left the Big 12 Conference in 2011, the conference has had a total of ten football teams to compete against.
However, on June 10, 2022, the conference made an announcement that it would be adding three more teams in 2023. The following year, however, it is expected that some of its original members may leave the league.
According to Brian Davis, the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns are planning to leave the Big 12 league in the year 2024.
Kansas overcame the greatest deficit in the history of the NCAA championship game to defeat UNC 72-69.
YES THEY KAN Kansas came back from the greatest deficit ever overcome in an NCAA championship game to defeat UNC 72-69.
On Twitter, a reporter for the Austin American-Statesman who covers the Texas Longhorns tweeted that “one high-ranking Texas source tells me today that 2024 is still a more feasible goal date for Texas and OU to join the SEC early.” Davis covers the Texas Longhorns.
This indicates that there is now the potential for the Big 12 Conference to have a total of 14 different teams for the 2022 season.
The AAC made the announcement on June 10, 2022, and according to The Athletic, it is currently believed that the conference would get $18 million per school in exchange for the buyout.
Will the SEC let Texas join?
A statement released by the Athletic Association of Colleges (AAC) commissioner said, “I would like to thank UCF President Alexander Cartwright, Cincinnati President Neville Pinto, and Houston President Renu Khator – as well as Tulane President Michael Fitts, who is chair of our Board of Directors – for their efforts and leadership to arrive at a sensible resolution to the three schools’ departure from the conference.”
“Under the umbrella of the American Athletic Conference, all three schools achieved a great deal of success, and all three played a significant role in elevating the American Athletic Conference to new heights, both in terms of its athletic and academic accomplishments. We want the best for them and are looking forward to having them participate in our conference in 2022-2023.”
CBS Sports reports that Charlotte and UTSA are candidates to become members of the American Athletic Conference in time for the 2023 season.
Not only is it possible that they are incorrect, but there is also a strong possibility that they are incorrect. The Southeastern Conference has its own unique kind of football. It is one that routinely and easily defeats its opponents and whose best teams, in any given season, come dangerously close to being invincible.
Both the Longhorns and the Sooners have fond memories of their teams’ heydays. They are able to imagine that they are on the verge of obtaining new ones. Remembering the past or having faith won’t get you far in the SEC. Even though they are now the team to beat, the Oklahoma Sooners have not won the National Championship or had an undefeated season since the year 2000. Texas has only been able to win 61.3% of its games since 2005 when they took home the National Championship. The Horns struggled to a record of 5-7 in Steve Sarkisian’s first year as head coach of the programme.
In the previous season, no team advanced to the Big 12 Championship game. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are the preseason favourite to win the Big 12 Championship in 2022, as many others have predicted. The Baylor Bears, coached by Dave Arenda, are the Big 12 team that is showing the fastest improvement. The Bears won the Big 12 championship the year before by defeating the Cowboys.
Is Texas football moving to SEC?
According to a previous report by CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, if Oklahoma and Texas wanted to join the Southeastern Conference in 2023, which is when the Big 12 will welcome its new members, the schools would be required to pay projected exit fees in the nine figures for breaking the league’s grant of media rights.
On the other hand, it is anticipated that such expenses will be more affordable in 2024, which is prior to the expiry date of the present media agreement held by the Big 12 in 2025. Even though the Southeastern Conference (SEC) said that Oklahoma and Texas will join the league on July 1, 2025 as a result of conference restructuring that took place the previous year, widespread rumours and assumptions suggested that an earlier date was more possible.
Since the beginning of this season, the Big 12 has been working with the presumption that both the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns would continue to be members of the league until the 2024–2025 academic year. The league has been getting ready for the likelihood that it would play two seasons with a structure that includes 14 teams. This would need the sport of football to be divided into two divisions.
According to a report from Saturday Down South, the educational institutions who are participating in the SEC Meetings in Destin, Florida are considering potential future schedule forms, and they have the intention of include both Texas and Oklahoma in the discussion of such patterns. Due to the earlier commitments they had made to the Big 12, the Longhorns and Sooners did not send any delegates to the 2022 meetings.
In an interview earlier this month, Sankey discussed the possibility of doing away with divisions entirely and concentrating instead on the teams who are most deserving of a spot in the SEC Championship. If the league were to change its structure from eight divisions to four pods, that would be another possibility to consider.
