Ruth Pointer Age: The Pointer Sisters were formed in 1972 when Jennifer Pointer joined her sisters. Their first album was published in 1973. Prior to Bonnie’s departure from the group in 1977, the group gained popularity with songs such as “Yes We Can Can,” their country crossover smash, “Fairytale,” and “How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side).”

Continuing as a trio, the group had their greatest success by covering songs from many genres such as rock, pop, and new wave. Singles such as “Fire” (1978), “He’s So Shy” (1980), and “Slow Hand” (1981) were among their most successful (1981).

After the release of the Break Out album in 1983, the group had its greatest level of popularity, which included songs such as “Automatic,” “Jump (For My Love),” “I’m So Excited,” “Neutron Dance,” and the single “Baby Come And Get It.”

Among its most noteworthy songs are “Automatic” and “Neutron Dance,” both of which reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and earned them two Grammy Awards for Ruth’s lead vocals. Ruth, along with her sister Anita, are the only founding members who are still actively involved with The Pointer Sisters.

When she was a child, Pointer performed for the Disney film Oliver & Company, where she sang the song “Streets of Gold” as well as a repeat of the song “Why Should I Worry” with fellow cast member Billy Joel. In the film Oliver & Company, she supplied the singing voice of the character Rita. In the 1990s, Ruth’s daughter, Issa, became a member of the family. In 1994, the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was dedicated to them.

Pointer appeared as “Cupcake” in season 6 of The Masked Singer, which aired in October of 2021. Pointer revealed that she was scheduled to perform on the show as part of a duo with her sister Anita, who was dressed in a Cupcake costume that had been copied and recolored, after being unmasked. Unfortunately, Anita was suffering with a medical condition, which forced Pointer to act on his own.
