A Connecticut man who hacked into more than 200 iCloud accounts belonging to celebrities and other notable individuals has been sentenced to eight months in jail, according to court documents. At a federal court hearing in Bridgeport on Wednesday, August 29, George Garofano was found guilty and punished. Following his release from jail, he will be required to serve three years of supervised release and complete 60 hours of community service.

The guy from North Branford was one of four people arrested in connection with the 2014 hacking disaster that resulted in private images of Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Upton, and others being made publicly available.

The hackers, according to authorities, utilized a phishing strategy in which they sent emails that appeared to be from Apple security accounts and requested usernames and passwords. Garofano entered a guilty plea in April and requested mercy, claiming that he would lose his civil rights for the rest of his life if he were convicted of a felony.

A vast cache of celebrity nude images was uploaded on the internet by a hacker, prompting the FBI to launch an investigation. Apple was examining the security of its iCloud storage system on Monday as more graphic photos were shared.

Using a security-busting program, the perpetrator – who shared photographs of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and others — is likely to have been able to discover passwords without being locked out, according to experts.

“Thank you, iCloud,” actress Kirsten Dunst jokingly tweeted along with a lewd image to criticize Apple’s security shortcomings, according to the New York Times. Among the celebrities targeted by the hacking attempt was actress Kirsten Dunst, who had a pair of her private nude images leaked onto the Internet.
