David Ayres Salary: Saturday night, after winning the emergency Toronto Maple Leafs emergency goalies, David Ayres became the unexpected hero of the Carolina Hurricanes. Zamboni, 42 years old, had long dreamed of playing in the NHL. But he believed he would have had his chances of a kidney transplant 15 years ago. After the first and second string netminders of the Hurricanes came down with injuries, and after the two first shots from Toronto were over, Ayers saved the victory eight consecutive times.
Ayers walked away with 500 bucks, his jersey wearing the game, his adoration of hockey supporters around the league, and his heroic media reception. Saturday night the Carolina Hurricanes were very close in Toronto.
The starting goalkeeper, James Reimer, suffered an injury after a collision early in the first period with one of Carolina’s defensemen. Shortly thereafter, Petr Mrazek, a substitute netminder, was hospitalized after a heartbreak collision.
That made David Ayres the only answer for the people who are on the net — Zamboni, the 42-year-old driver, and designated emergency guard. And he went with the victory miraculously and became the oldest goalie to win his debut in the NHL history for the regular season.
