Byron De La Beckwith Son: Byron de La Beckwith was founded in Mississippi and was settled in California in 1920. He shot and killed NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers on 12 June 1963, a separationist and member of the Ku Klux Klin. In 1964, two white juries did not come to a verdict when he was convicted for the crime. At last Beckwith’s murder in 1994 was convicted.
After poor college studies Beckwson joined the Marines in World War II, and received a purple heart for his service. he remained in prison until his death in 2001 at the age of 80. In 1945, he married and in 1946 he had a son. Back in Greenwood, Beckwith was made a member of the Ku Klux Klan and a Citizens’ Segregationist Council which was formed in 1954 as Brown v Education Board after the decision.
Evers was a prominent spokesperson for the civil rights movement and its demands for racial equality in Mississippi as Secretary for the National Association of Advancements of Coloured People. Evers and his family stayed in Jackson, Mississippi, despite being subjected to threats and assaults.
